Lock Your Car! Campaign
The Fairfield Police Cadets are dedicated to helping members of the community in any way they can. In addition to their bi-annual Shred Day event, which helps prevents Fairfield residents from becoming victims of Identity Theft, the cadets are starting their first Lock Your Car! campaign in hopes of preventing community members from becoming victims of theft.
Many residents and visitors are becoming victims of theft from their vehicles while shopping in Fairfield because they leave their doors unlocked with their valuables inside. Additionally, many vehicles are being stolen simply because owners are leaving their keys inside the car with the doors unlocked. While Fairfield Police Officers have been successful in catching criminals conducting these acts, they cannot be everywhere at once, and the Fairfield Police Cadets want to help by educating the public who are not aware that these thefts are happening.
In Driveways
These crimes are happening all over town. Criminals will drive around early in the morning and look for vehicles that residents have started to warm up in the cold weather. They also will try door handles at night looking for keys or valuables.
In Parking Lots
While out shopping, many people leave their cars unlocked because they might only be going in for a few minutes. Criminals will still take advantage of this and try car handles and take any valuables. Even if you don't have any valuables, leaving a car unlocked only encourages criminals to try for success in the next one!
At Gas Stations
Many people run into the gas station to grab a snack or pay for their gas, and they don't lock their car or even keep it running. Criminals sit and wait for people to do this and they quickly jump in and steal the car.

What are the Fairfield Police Cadets doing about it?
The Fairfield Police Cadets are going to busy shopping centers to leave small reminder pamphlets on resident's cars. Many victims officers speak to are unaware that car theft and theft from cars is a problem in the area. The Fairfield Police Cadets aim to educate the community through these reminders.
Additionally, stores are allowing the cadets to place posters at their entrances to remind people not to leave their vehicles unlocked while shopping at their stores. |
